These lectures have been made possible by a generous gift from Rutgers' Class of 1954 to the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials.  The lectures consist of timely and stimulating talks that span interests from basic research to product commercialization.  Members of the public  are cordially invited to attend.

Rutgers University President Richard McCormick (shown at L) introduced Dr. C. Everett Koop, who delivered the 2008 Rutgers Class of 1954 Endowed Lecture. Dr. Koop was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) in March 1981, and sworn in as Surgeon General on November 17, 1981.  Additionally, he was appointed Director of the Office of International Health in May 1982.  As Surgeon General, Dr. Koop oversaw the activities of the 6,000 member PHS Commissioned Corps and advised the public on health matters such as smoking and health, diet and nutrition, environmental health hazards, and the importance of immunization and disease prevention.  He also became the government’s chief spokesperson on AIDS.  After two four-year terms as Surgeon General, he continues to educate the public about health issues through his writings, the electronic media, and as Senior Scholar of the C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth. He is presently the Elizabeth DeCamp McInerny Professor of Surgery at Dartmouth Medical School.

Ethics and the Bioscience Revolution

The annual Rutgers Class of 1954 Lecture was given by Professor David Finegold, Dean of Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations.  Professor Finegold will discuss “Ethics and the Bioscience Revolution” on Tuesday, November 27 at 10:00 am.  A panel discussion among faculty and industry representatives followed.

Prior to joining Rutgers, Dr. Finegold was a professor at the Keck Graduate Institute in Claremont, CA and at USC’s Marshall School of Business.  He is the author of more than 90 articles, book chapters and policy reports, and has written or edited six books, including Corporate Boards: Adding Value at the Top (with Jay Conger and Ed Lawler) and BioIndustry Ethics (Elsevier Academic Press, 2005).   He consults and provides executive education and coaching to public and private sector organizations on issues about talent management and employee development, corporate governance, integrating ethics into strategic decision-making, and designing effective organizations.
